![]() Victoria's mother (the Duchess of Kent) had raised Victoria in a cloistered and highly controlled environment (the two in fact shared the same bedroom). This is an indication of the teenager establishing her independence with her ascendancy to the throne. Victoria refers often in her diary to seeing her visitors "alone" or "quite alone". It was there that the eighteen-year-old was told of her Uncle's death. Awakened at dawn Victoria lived with her mother in Kenningston Palace, London (the same palace Lady Di lived in before her death). Victoria was William's niece and had been designated the heir to the childless king from her birth. The British monarchy had suffered bad times, discredited by the madness of George III (1760-1820), the excesses of George IV (1820-1830), and the unimpressive reign of William IV (1830-37). She became England's longest reigning monarch, her offspring governed Europe, she gave her name to an era, but she was only a teenager when she ascended the throne of the world's mightiest empire. Recoverit Data RecoveryĪlthough Recoverit Data Recovery doesn’t boast almost any additional capabilities, it does offer a decent data recovery performance and support for many file signatures, making it suitable for people who just want to recover their data in the most basic file loss scenario and move on without spending any time on data loss prevention. Unfortunately, it also stands out with its price, since the annual subscription is way more expensive than Disk Drill’s lifetime license. This data recovery software for Windows stands out with its support for over 1,000 file signatures, allowing it to recover even more obscure files (the vendor fails to provide any details on these 1,000 formats, though). You might want to give it a try-just don’t expect too much and remember that far more feature-packed solutions do exist. And there is a ton of freedom for those who are adventurous enough to use their own. With an increase in digital fonts and digital lettering, there are countless options for those who want to use a cursive font. Linearity Curve (formerly Vectornator) is one of the platforms where you can create contemporary style designs for your own fonts (more about this later). As technology has advanced, computer software programs have also developed to help you design your own customized cursives easily. Like the first hand lettering artists, people today have designed and created their own unique fonts. Some started at one end of the page and went across, while others started at the top left side and continued down to the bottom right. Some writers used large, swooping loops like today’s beautiful brush-style script fonts, while others wrote using smaller glyphs. This new form of handwriting expanded the diversity of cursive-style calligraphy and led to an increasing demand for those who had superior hand lettering skills.ĭuring this time, each person had their own unique cursive handwriting style. Formal scripts are what you often see in invitations, digital signatures, and official documents like diplomas and certificatesĭuring the 15th–17th centuries, printers began creating better-quality books that featured elegant script fonts and ornate decoration. Script fonts are created with fluid strokes similar to a handwritten stroke. ![]() While they are super similar, there are some slight distinctions we should make before we move forward. You might think cursive fonts and script fonts are the same thing. ![]() Many such elegant fonts are available, ranging from casual handwriting fonts to block printing style, italicized script, calligraphy, brushstroke, and even stencils. However, cursive writing isn’t something that everyone is taught to read, so it's often considered a more complex font to digest compared a regular sans-serif script. Many educators teach cursive writing to students so that each generation can learn how to write in cursive correctly. Some people find these letters easier to read for that reason. The letterforms of this type of font appear more natural than other types because they mimic handwriting. They can be printed out or drawn onto paper to create beautiful artwork. Throughout an entire typeface, readers will find no spacing between letters, and each letter connects to the next.Ĭursive calligraphy fonts have historically been used for event invitations, menus, and other decorative documents. Fountain pens have largely been replaced by contemporary writing utensils today, however cursive hand-lettering typefaces remain popular.Ĭursive fonts are decorative fonts written in an upward, downward, and/or slant motion. ![]() For example, if you have a pen that frequently leaks ink, it’s more practical to write in cursive because you barely need to lift your pen from the page. Your hand flows easily on the page when writing cursive because you don’t have to lift your hand between each letter.īeautiful brush-script fonts evolved from necessity. So, yeah, you probably know what cursive writing is, but let’s really examine this penmanship style.īefore discussing how to use cursive letter forms, we want to get into the nitty-gritty of what sets cursive writing apart from other writing styles.Ĭursive writing was created to be a smoother, faster way to write. ![]() ![]() If you’re hosting your portfolio on your own personal website, we recommend using a portfolio websites tool such as Wix, Squarespace, or Format for ease and simplicity. ![]() ![]() While most pilots at this time had been highly trained in wind shear - rapid changes in wind speed or direction - surprisingly little was known about the specific dangers of microbursts. Only 27 people survived this horrific event, and 137 lives were lost. As the aircraft descended toward the runway, an explosive downdraft of wind knocked the plane full of passengers to the ground, sending the aircraft careening onto a highway where it hit and killed an automobile driver and plowed into two large water tanks where it burst into flames. A thunderstorm was hovering over Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport as the pilots of Flight 191 were preparing to land. One terrible disaster in particular - the crash of Delta Airlines Flight 191 - is credited with speeding up microburst research as well as bringing stronger safety measures for all aircraft. And like tornadoes, microburst development can be difficult to detect on radar and seem to come out of nowhere. With winds up to 100 mph, trying to maneuver through a strong microburst is about as difficult as flying through a tornado. Microbursts still pose an incredible danger to aircraft, particularly during a take-off or landing. Many of these had been mistakenly blamed on pilot error. Before the introduction of Doppler radar at airports just a few decades ago, microbursts were responsible for as many as 20 major airline accidents, resulting in over 500 deaths, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The study of microbursts is relatively new in the field of atmospheric science. When a tornado hits, it leaves behind a more circular or meandering pattern of destruction and debris, while microburst winds cause straight-line damage that radiates from a center point of impact. The surest way of knowing whether it was a tornado or a microburst, however, is by studying the pattern of damage. In fact, microbursts can cause so much damage that residents often believe they’ve been struck by a tornado. “There has not been a detailed study done to look at how many happen on average each year in different areas, but it is believed a lot of wind damage happening in thunderstorms is likely due to microbursts, so that our climatology of wind damage from storms might give us a good idea ,” Gallus said. ![]() According to the National Weather Service, there are approximately 10 microburst reports for every one tornado, but these numbers are just an estimate. Though less well-known than tornadoes, microbursts are much more common. (Image credit: NWS Birmingham) Microburst or tornado? Some microbursts, known as hybrids, have characteristics of both wet and dry types and are driven by several influences, such as dry air entrainment, precipitation loading, cooling beneath the cloud base and/or sublimation (ice crystals turning directly into vapor), according to NOAA.Īn animated image shows the core of a microburst slamming into the ground. “When this happens, a storm can form from the moisture up high, but as it creates rain, the rain falls into the very dry air near the ground, and it evaporates, which cools the air.” Precipitation that evaporates before it hits the ground is called virga. This kind of situation happens relatively often in places like Denver,” said Gallus. ![]() “For dry microbursts, we know they are more likely when the relative humidity a few thousand feet up in the sky is rather high, but it is much lower (dryer) below that level, especially near the ground. These microbursts are typically driven by both dry air entrainment and water loading.ĭry microbursts usually begin with dry air entrainment due to moisture in the upper levels but eventually turn into wind-driven events with no surface precipitation. Wet microbursts are more common in humid climates where there are plenty of thunderstorms, such as the Southeastern United States. Depending on where you are in the country will determine which type you are more likely to encounter. Microbursts are divided into two basic types: wet and dry. When this cool, dry air is further pulled down by the weight of precipitation, it is called water loading, and this causes the air to drop even faster. ![]() William Gallus, a professor of meteorology and numerical weather prediction in the department of geological and atmospheric sciences at Iowa State University, explains this phenomenon: “Cool air is heavier than warm air, so this blob of cold air can plunge toward the ground, and it spreads out rapidly when it hits the ground, kind of like how water explodes sideways when a water balloon is dropped and hits the ground,” he told Live Science. ![]() |
